Millions of neurons in our brain are responsible for transmitting neural messages. Neurons communicate with each other through electrical changes in the form of brainwaves.
Whenever there is a change in our general feelings or moods, the way these neurons communicate and send messages also changes.
We usually feel tired when the waves are slow; conversely, when the waves are faster, we feel more energy inside our body and are healthier.
Classification of brain waves by frequency
- Beta (13-30 Hz)
- Alpha (8-12 Hz)
- Theta (4-7 Hz)
- Delta (3 – 0.5 Hz)
- Gamma (31 -130 Hz)
- Epsilon (less than 0.5 Hz)
- Lambda (100-200 Hz)
Function of different types of brainwaves
Beta brainwaves
Brain wave amplitude: 13 to 30 Hz
These waves are in the group of high-frequency and low wave amplitude, mainly seen when waking up, conscious thoughts, logical thinking, and sensory activity. Having the right amount of beta waves allows us to focus entirely on our homework or workplace tasks. Excessive levels of these waves can lead to severe stress or anxiety. Most waves are associated with high levels of consciousness. Your brain beta function naturally increases when you drink coffee or receive another stimulus. These fast-frequency waves are present throughout the day during the completion of people’s conscious activities, such as critical thinking, writing, reading, and social interactions.
- Excessive levels of the beta brain wave cause anxiety, adrenaline rush, high arousal, inability to relax, and stress.
- Less than an average amount of beta brain waves causes hyperactivity | ADHD, daydreaming, depression, and poor cognition.
- The right amount of beta brain waves causes conscious concentration, memory improvement, and problem-solving ability.
Beta brainwave enhancer
Coffee, energy drinks, various sensory stimuli, and anticonvulsants are the most common wave of brainwaves we deal with during the day and night, the “beta wave.” In this case, the conscious mind takes control of the brain, and the subconscious mind is not available and is busy; Now that you are reading this, your brain waves are on this frequency.
When the brain is in the beta wave frequency, we usually focus on the logical activities of the brain’s left hemisphere. So when we are busy with the daily work of life, we are alert and aware that we are dealing with life issues, judge, decide, focus our mental activity on walking or driving, and the brain waves are in the beta range. Many sedatives and hypnotics increase beta brain waves, so unlike mental relaxation, the cerebral cortex activity will increase. Also, sometimes when a person falls asleep under the influence of these drugs, he will not be able to sleep generally due to a change in the pattern of brain waves. This is the reason why these people feel tired after sleeping.
Alpha brainwaves
The frequency range of the alpha brain wave is between 8 and 12 Hz
The alpha brainwave is the bridge between our conscious thinking and our unconscious thinking. In other words, alpha brainwaves are the frequency range between beta and theta brainwaves. If we have stress, there is “alpha blockage,” which includes intense beta activity and decreased alpha activity. Beta waves necessarily prevent the production of the alpha because we get very excited.
- Excessive levels: daydreaming, inability to concentrate, excessive relaxation, and somewhat lethargy
- Less than usual: anxiety, high stress, trouble sleeping and insomnia, obsession,
- Appropriate level: calmness, proper visual attention
- Alpha Brain Wave Enhancer: Alcohol, Marijuana, Sedatives, Some Antidepressants
The alpha wave helps us in our daily decision-making tasks, learning, and thinking. This conscious wave keeps us awake in the active and current state. Alpha types help to achieve optimal performance, reduce anxiety, strengthen the immune system, create positive thinking and integration of mind and body, emotional balance, introspection and develop a feeling of happiness and inner awareness.
When you close your eyes and are in complete peace of mind, body, and mind, the brain waves enter the alpha wave frequency. The best time to better understand these brain waves is when you are asleep and awake. You will experience these waves twice each time you sleep, Once a moment before going to bed and once a moment after waking up. The duration of it is concise and transient.
The importance of alpha brainwaves
Of all the brain waves, the alpha wave is the most important; Because despite its short time, at this frequency, our conscious mind is turned off, and our subconscious mind becomes available, and we can program it.
Also, both brain hemispheres are active at this frequency, and we have a higher IQ, so our learning and induction increase.
The information that enters the brain is stored without processing and filtering. Because the conscious mind is off at this frequency.
In meditation, by performing various techniques, they direct brain waves to this frequency so that they can influence the subconscious mind with soothing indoctrination or emphatic sentences.
If you are fully awake (while on a beta wave), focusing on a subject while not realizing what is happening around you (for example, while reading a book), your brain waves will travel at the alpha frequency. And your subconscious mind becomes available, and the subject you focus on influences you (for example, the book’s contents).
Children have Alpha waves from about one and a half years old, and the brain’s learning power increases with the development of these waves.
Theta waves
Frequency range: 4 to 8 Hz
Theta waves naturally occur in deep hypnosis (before going to sleep), REM sleep, deep creative visualization exercises, trance, and deep psychoanalysis.
In this state, our awareness decreases because we focus on the inner parts of our being, and our heart rate and breathing rhythm decrease.
This is our gateway to buried memories, unresolved problems, and emotional shocks.
It can be a little annoying to get into this situation without enough mastery or an experienced coach because you can access many buried feelings and emotions you hate.
Although you enter this state in REM sleep, if you want to join this state consciously, you must have successive deep relaxation sessions.
Theta waves are associated with deep inspiration and visualization, and these waves make you very tired and weaken your concentration.
This amplitude of the wave arises in daydreaming and dreaming. This brain wave causes the person to experience deep and early emotional states in the relationship. Excessive activity of theta waves leads people to depression and can make them indoctrinated, which can be based on too much relaxation and create conditions such as semi-hypnosis. Theta waves enhance insight, creativity, and a greater sense of nature. This brain wave is also the cause of sleep that causes freshness and invigoration in the person. The brain of a person with long working hours can not produce Theta brainwave.
- Overdose: ADHD, depression, hyperactivity, impulsive movements, inattention
- Less than usual: anxiety, poor emotional states, stress
- Appropriate level: creativity, emotional communication, calmness, insight, and intelligence
- Theta Wave Enhancer: Slowing Drugs
Neurofeedback protocols improve attention and concentration in hyperactive children (ADHD ) by reducing the theta wave and increasing the beta brain wave.
Delta waves
Amplitude: 4 to 0.5 Hz
These waves are so deep in sleep that sleeps without a dream is said to exist. This state of the sleep cycle is also called deep-wave sleep.
In this state of sleep, the body grows and regains its health. The immune system and the muscles repair themselves.
Therefore, if we sleep in this state for a short time, we harm our body because the body can not provide the energy needed to repair itself in a brief time.
Those who meditate professionally and for a long time can enter the delta state more deeply, losing their awareness of their body and gaining a stronger spiritual connection.
If we get into this state when we wake up, we will become very emotional and impair our cognitive functions. If there is abnormal activity of these waves, the person will have learning disabilities or difficulty in consciousness. (Such as brain damage)
- Excessive rate: brain damage, learning difficulties, inability to think, severe hyperactivity
- Less than usual: failure to rejuvenate the body, poor sleep, inability to regenerate and prepare the brain
- The right amount: immune system, natural recovery, deep sleep, and energy
- Delta Wave Enhancer: Sleep, sedatives
Gamma brainwaves
Frequency range: 31 -130 Hz and above
Gamma waves are amazing! Firstly, they disappear entirely under anesthesia because they are directly related to the process of consciousness. Second, these waves are abundant in the brains of Tibetan monks – who have been practicing consciousness for years.
So gamma waves are vital to your balance in life – maybe even the rhythm of the love waves themselves! Gamma waves are seen in the states of the peak of creativity, concentration, and consciousness. In this case, the person may also have a strong spiritual understanding. This brain wave is involved in performing high-level tasks such as cognitive functions. Gamma waves are essential for learning, memory, and information processing. It is thought that 40 Hz gamma waves (the highest brain frequency) are used to combine the senses with understanding and learning new concepts. There is a finding that people with mental health problems or learning disabilities perform lower than average in their gamma waves.
- Excessive levels of gamma brain waves cause stress, anxiety, and irritability.
- Less than the normal range of gamma brain waves causes hyperactivity | ADHD, depression, and specific learning disability (SLD).
- The right amount of gamma brain waves causes integration of the senses, cognition, information processing, learning, perception, and REM stage of sleep.
- Gamma Brain Wave Enhancer: Meditation
Epsilon brainwaves
Epsilon waves fluctuate with a frequency of 0- 0.5 Hz
Overview: Epsilon waves are shallow frequency, below delta waves starting at 0.5 Hz. To imagine how low it is, most electroencephalogram (EEG) devices cannot measure less than 5 Hz.
If you zoom in enough, you will see that inside the Lambda wave, the Epsilon wave is prolonged (riding on the Lambda waves). And so, there seems to be a circular pattern between the very high end of the brain wave spectrum and the shallow end. And this is where it gets exciting. The so-called Epsilon is associated with “suspended animation.” The state where you are alive but have no apparent symptoms – your heart rate, respiration, or pulse is not understood. Some masters of yoga and meditation are said to be able to achieve this.
So I find it very interesting that the Lambda and Epsilon waves, despite being at the opposite end of the spectrum, have a reciprocal relationship and thus support each other.
Now, those who access these states through meditation and higher consciousness seem to follow the line between life and death. And again, I refer to what I have said before about the inability to fully explain what is happening in these situations, which makes sense to me because it is a level of consciousness that is fundamentally indescribable and perhaps immeasurable in science.
Benefits
Epsilon mode is a state of super alertness, much higher awareness, and perhaps suspended animation. So basically, this is a leap of faith and what you want to experience. It should also note that lambda waves are very high-frequency waves and may cause headaches in some people.
In addition, if you experiment with epsilon beans, you should do so while sleeping or sitting in meditation (lotus). Do not drive a car, do not operate machinery, or do anything that requires complete concentration. My advice to those new to brainwave music is to start with the most common brain wave modes (Delta, theta, alpha, beta). As a general rule, I recommend beginners create some theta bubbles to relieve stress and anxiety, access a meditation mode, and increase creativity—alpha hole for focus, productivity, and positivity, and Delta for better sleep. The best way to encourage the production of these brain waves is to practice daily meditation and use other music attached to the brain wave. This synchronizes the left and right hemispheres of the brain, resulting in higher brain function.
Lambda brainwaves
Lambda waves oscillate at a frequency of 100-200 Hz.
Oscillation means moving or rotating back and forth in a regular rhythm.
Overview
Lambda is a very high-frequency wave, much higher than the gamma frequency range, and even higher than the hyper gamma range, which is around the 100 Hz mark.
As mentioned in the introduction, Lambda waves are closely related to Epsilon waves. Interestingly, if you zoom in enough, you will see that the epsilon slow wave is a fast lambda wave. The epsilon wave is basically riding the lambda wave.
Experienced meditators such as Tibetan monks who can meditate for hours in the Himalayas without giving in to very low temperatures are in lambda brainwaves.
Likewise, you may have heard of a man known as the “Ice Man” who can control body temperature and resist freezing temperatures. He is thought to be able to hit the brain state of Lambda waves for a long time.
Thus lambda is associated with a much higher level of consciousness than deep meditation or spiritual awareness. This is mostly a state of oneness and complete integration.
Benefits
The Lambda government seems to be almost a secret country, one that is somewhat full of mystery.
Lambda is often accompanied by a moment of discovery and insight that is indescribable, the so-called “ah” moment. I guess the best way to put it is if you suddenly understand the meaning of life: you can feel it, but you can’t put it into words.
Amazing ♥️
